Monogamy and Medical Sciences Bypassing Advantages of Natural Selection

In this crazy and progressive world that we have here where monogamy is the established "norm" and medical sciences are advancing at a rapid pace and has been for many, many decades, we may find that these two things are having humanity bypassing the advantages that natural selection and evolution would provide.

Natural Selection would normally be able to weed out undesirable traits and mutations fairly quickly (speaking in relative evolutionary terms here) by not allowing them to be passed on to future generation. Monogamy and our Advancing Medical Sciences bypasses this evolutionary benefit.

Monogamy

Monogamy ensures that, with birthrates (55% male and 45% female) as they are, just about all males will essentially have a one mate (assuming an even population density) and that each person will have only one choice for a mate, even if that choice is not as good or desirable as they could possibly have or desire.

The top males will have their choice of mates and the less desirable males will have the left overs. This also means that these less desirable males will all have the opportunity to mate with a less desirable female ensuring that their (collective) less desirable genetics shall be passed on - perpetuating genes that would normally be weeded out due natural selection.

Today's world with enforced monogamy essentially helps to ensure that "less desirable" mates will be able to find a mate and will be able to pass on their less desirable genes to future generations. This ensures that genetic mutations and abnormalities will be carried on to future generations and it will take much longer for them to be removed from humanity's gene pool; whereas in cases where natural selection is allowed to run rampant the mates with less desirable traits or abnormalities would have their genes not passed on due to not being able to find a mate, thereby removing defective genes from the gene pool earlier, which allows for a higher quality and healthier humanity sooner than later.

Medical Sciences

Advanced medical sciences help to ensure that people with defective genes live longer and are more able to find mates; and therefore live longer and be more able to find a mate allowing them to carry on their defective genes to future generations, again, bypassing the advantages of Natural Selection.

People that would normally die off due to a severe genetic disease or would be shunned due to physical deformity or weakness are able to find a cure for their health and physical condition and be able procreate due a longer life span and having the indications of a physical abnormality removed or minimized.

Conclusion

Advance medical sciences allow people to live longer and healthier, and are able to hide evidence of genetic abnormalities. Combined with monogamy's gift of a higher probability of finding a mate make it much more likely that defective genes will remain in humanity's gene pool longer instead of being weeded out due to no being able to find a mate.

Ordination Anniversary

Today will mark the first full year that I have been ordained by the Universal Life Church. Since that day I have performed 2 weddings which has been a heart warming experience. It is wonderful to be apart of this rite of passage with these families. It is hard to put into the words the joy of performing weddings and participating and witnessing their passage and vow to one another.

Being ordained also has me asking a lot of questions about religion and and priests and exactly what it means to be a Priest, Father, Minister, Pasteur, Reverend, etc...

I will also probably pick up a few more weddings or other rites this year as well.

Sacred Texts

Sacred texts such as the Bible and the Koran are tools that can be used for ill or for good. If you go to these with ill will, prejudice, and malice in your heart then that is what you will find. If you go to it with love, compassion, and acceptance then that is what you will find. These sacred-texts are not inherently good or evil. It, as well as hand guns or cars, are merely refined lumps of inert matter. It is the user, the wielder of said item, whose actions shall be wrought of carelessness, and compassion or malice for their fellow man that shall give them power.

Vanity, arrogance, hubris and pride while reading these text can lead to a false sense of assuredness of interpretation. A wise man is one that will ask why their interpretation is correct or incorrect, and even in the face of affirmative evidence be willing to doubt its seeming validity. All 'truth' is seen through the eyes, ears, and thoughts of person that are born on the wings of transgressions, preconceptions, love, fear, doubt, assumptions, and pride. How can any man know the full truth when we see life through such a blurry and soiled lens? How can man, with all our flaws and fears, know the truth and use these sacred texts appropriately?

The True Disease of Humanity: Divisiveness

Throughout the history of humanity we have forged the answer to our spiritual or theological question with a plethora of disparate answers: polytheism, monotheism, animism, atheism, universalism, humanism and a variety of other answers that also come in a wide variety of very specific flavors. So many religions, beliefs, spiritual or aspiritual paths that are in the world that are given credence by many different cultures, backgrounds and ethnicities. Some examples of these more specific answers are as follows:

Unitarian Universalist, Catholic, Orthodox, Christian, Mormon, Methodist, Presbyterian, Muslim, Pagan, Wicca, Druid, Witchcraft, Buddhist, Hindu, Zen, Bahai Faith, Quaker, Spirit or Ancestor Worship, etc... We also have the Agnostics, Freethinkers, Humanists, and Secularists and a whole bunch more that I am not going to name for the sake of brevity.

What was the predominant 'answer' before Christianity rose to the forefront - Polytheism. The worship of multiple deities such as was found in the Norse, Celtic, Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Persian, and Sumerian cultures as well as many others in the days of yore. How can we can we reconcile this in our predominately monotheistic world? How does all of this variety make any sense? Polytheism exist today in the pagan/wiccan religions as well as other faiths, while Christianity is still one of the most dominant and forceful answers - and yet there are still these other answers to humanity's need for an answer to 'that question' than burns inside of us all in one way or another.

Evangelists of a faith will often say that they are right and the one true answer and that if you do not follow their belief that nasty things happen to you either now or after you have passed on. We are right be cause our sacred religious text says so. What makes any one religion the one true religion that will offer you your salvation (assuming that is what you are looking for)? How will you know? How can anyone know for sure? Humanity is divided into many religions and (a)spiritual paths, and many people preach their path in an 'us verses everyone else' mentality - the 'we are right and you are going to hell' religious elitism that segregates and divides us as a people and puts us at odds with one another, much to our detriment.

Within a Single Faith No One Completely Agrees on How that Faith is Defined:

No two people can completely agree as to how a specific religion should be practiced in-toto. Each person has their own version of what is right and wrong for their religious beliefs and that is steeped in opinions, misinterpretations, biases, prejudices, and life experiences. Many of the mainstream beliefs are agreed upon but once you get past that it is a wholly different game. If the leaders and faithful of a given religion cannot agree about what it is to truly practice or be a member of their proclaimed religion how can they not be divided? How can they be one? How can there be one true theological or spiritual answer if everyone cannot agree even within their chosen faith?

Who is right? Who is wrong?

We are humans. We are all the brothers and sisters of humanity: Black, White, Chinese, African, Irish, Protestant, Wiccan, Hippy, Liberal, Socialist, Libertarian, Freak, Queer, Straight, Cloistered, Free, Obese, Skinny, Forlorn, Optimistic. However you want to label someone, their lifestyle, their beliefs, or appearance does not matter because at the end of the day we all bleed the same. We all are human - fallible, mistake ridden, arrogant, biased and loving. Our cultures value being right and believe that if I am right than someone else has to be wrong and therefore inferior or somehow lesser. This belief that there is always a right and a wrong is part of the problem as it leads to division, superiority, contempt, and fear.

How can life be so cleanly defined with so many different beliefs? Life is more about shades of gray. People within a faith cannot agree as to what it means in-toto how to worship in their faith how can there be a clearly defined right or wrong. To one person something may be right and to another it is wrong and even have very well thought out rationalizations for it. Everyone has an opinion. Everyone likes to think that they are right and by virtue, someone else has to be wrong. And even some want to kill, torture, and enslave you because they think you are wrong and that somehow you need to be punished or saved from your conviction or lack thereof.

I value intelligent discourse about theology and (a)spirituality, and am willing to change my views in light of a better understanding, but I guarantee you that if you try to force your beliefs on me that I will not acquiesce and resist anything that you have to say, especially if you threaten my safety of the safety of the people that I care about. Enacting divisive behavior only begets the same - more divisiveness.

You are Wrong and You are Right.

I propose to you today that you are all wrong about your theological views. I also propose that you are also right. You are right to believe that your faith is right for you, but you are wrong to believe that your faith is what is right for anyone else. You are also wrong to believe that another person's religion is wrong, because it is wrong for you. Having the ability to impose and force your beliefs onto someone or a peoples does not make it any more correct or right. You will have only sown fear and anger into those that you subject you beliefs upon while pushing them further from 'your answer'.

We need to celebrate that we have different answers and bask in the glory of diversity. We are human and we all have a (a)spiritual or theological belief. We are not all going to agree even if we are of the same faith. I want you to talk about religion, theology, or spirituality with like minded and different minded people. Find your commonalities and differences and accept them. Their religions' views are different than yours and that is OK because everyone's is going to be different in one way or another and that does not make it wrong. It just makes it different. Our religious beliefs are as varied and similar as we humans are ourselves.

Divisiveness

Divisiveness is the true enemy of our happiness as a species and I do not just mean religious divisiveness: national and sexual, ethnic and racial, cultural and monetary. We need to break down the divisions and prejudices in humanity so that we can all be truly free and safe. We need to accept and try to understand one another, and accept that we may not agree on many issues, but that does not make us wrong, just different. Racial and ethnic prejudice as well as religious are among the greatest crimes against humanity that needs to be stopped.

Wars and civil crimes are being committed with prejudice, fear, and hatred as its impetus and this is a horrible and unforgivable crime that we all have to stop. Every single human being has the power to make a difference, but you have to want to make a difference. I do not mean the difference of creating divisions of humanity, I mean the difference of love, acceptance, and healing. Take a moment right now and make the pledge to make a difference: to love one another and to be able to agree to disagree; for it to be OK to not have the same theological beliefs; to fight prejudice and fear in your heart and replace it will love and acceptance. Anything other than that and you be part of the problem. We are all part of the problem just by virtue of being human. We are not perfect and can never be, but we can strive to set as good example by changing how we think and how we act towards one another.

Acceptance and Not Tolerance

This is pulled form something larger that I am writing so it may seem a bit disjointed and a little out of context I have tried to clean it up so that the idea is preserved out of its original context. I know that you will see where this is coming from...

Tolerance is a problem that we have in our relations with others. Tolerance means 'I believe that you are incorrect or mistaken in your beliefs, opinion, or way of life, but I am not going to make a big deal about it'. You still believe that you are correct and/or that they are wrong. Tolerance is not enough as it divides us with invisible mental and emotional borders. This 'Tolerance' problem plagues humanity in issues of religion, sexual orientation, family orientation, politics, or whatever the family is going to eat Friday night.

Acceptance is what is needed. Your views, opinions, or way of life may be different than someone else's and that is OK, and perhaps there is something that can be learned from that. A difference is only natural and inevitable as our live's experiences are as varied as we are, but do not believe that because someone's views are different from yours that they are necessarily wrong. Their views, especially when it comes to religion, may not be right for you, but it may be right for them. Everyone believes something different even if there is a lot of similarity in base beliefs. So, take the moment and revel in the differences you have with you fellow and accept it.

Revel in the differences that make each of us unique in perspective. Accept that we are different, but do not reduce yourself to toleration.

Marriage, Love, and Gay Marriage Reading

Here is some reading about Marriage, Love, and Gay Marriage from Biblical, Anthropological, and other perspectives:

10 Reasons Why Gay Marriage is Wrong!

  1. Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, cosmetic surgery, hair dye and air conditioning.
  2. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.
  3. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.
  4. Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.
  5. Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Brittany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.
  6. Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.
  7. Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.
  8. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.
  9. Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.
  10. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

What is it about Marriage?

What is it about marriage that changes everything in your life? Why is that before you say those words you are one person and after you are different? Why is it that we change and our relationship with our loved one(s) changes if only just a little bit, or a lot? Why do some fear it and some crave it?

That moment in which we say (literally or not) "I want to be there to witness the rest of our lives, and to partake in, share, and explore all of life's possibilities with you, as we so choose, for better or for worse." and we feel elation, happiness or for some - dread?

There is something magical an powerful in that moment where we say "I do." or "I will." that we know that nothing in our lives will ever be the same again. Why?

The Journey and not the Destination

I have had a moment in my life where it really hit me that it is the journey that matters so much more than the destination. This little epiphany happened during the first month or so working at my current job, following graduating from college and returning from Europe.

I have had a plan since I was a Junior in high school (1991) that I had been following, and this little plan brought me here, to this job (destination). I went in the military to learn how to learn, to see the world a little bit, and to better prepare myself for life and college. I then went to college, graduated with honors with an BS in Computer Information Systems and an AS in Computer Networking Technologies. Following that I went to Europe for 10 weeks to visit friends and then came back and found this job.

Along this way I dealt with entering the military, surviving their training and schooling, getting out of the military, getting married and then divorced, had my grandfather pass away, started a new job. I drove about 2 1/2 hours each 13 hour day - 6 days a week. Desert Storm and 9-11 happened during this time as well. I have been through a lot to get to this point and it would not have been so significant or important to me had I not had to endure and experience everything that I did.

Yes, the destination is nice and I am really appreciating it. I love my job and where I am in life. I am proud of a lot that I have done. I could not have done it alone though. I had help from friends and family. All of this helps me to appreciate what I have. For me, it is the Journey through life and not where we end up that matters. For without the journey there can be no real perspective or way to truly appreciate what you have accomplished.

The Dichotomy of Love

How do we work our way through the agony of loss or betrayal of the loved ones (and I do not necessarily mean romantic loves) in our lives. How do we deal with the anger, the betrayal, the loss, that quiet desperation and loneliness that pervades our very being when those moments dominate our lives? How can we continue when all that we believe and want has been dashed on torturous, cold, and uncaring rocks.

Love is a mixed bag of good and bad emotions throughout our lives. The love that we feel for our family, friends, and lovers can bring about a tumult of emotions that can bring you to sobbing tears of happiness and drop you to your knees in desperation and despair. Why does Love do this to us? Why do we, as Humans, do this to each other? Why do we allow ourselves to be subject to the risk of such depths and heights? At times it almost seems as though that Love may not be worth the pain and we want to give up on all relations with other Humans, let alone even consider opening up, caring, or loving again.

At one moment we think that we have found the loves of our lives and are living high and happy on New Relationship Energy (NRE), looking forward to the future brightly; and the next moment we are slapped with something so devastating and life changing that we feel that we will never recover or even be able to continue living.

I have been brought to tears and wanted to allow myself and felt justified to allow myself to hate after having my heart torn asunder. I have come to appreciate how wonderful a person is after enduring tough moments with them. I have felt deep and passionate friendships and love that I would not have traded for the world. I have had some completely ripped apart and not a shred of it remains. I have felt the highs and lows of Love and I still remain, eager and anxious even through the scars and memories of tears shed to love and grow for in each moment in which there is Love and caring completely subsumes the losses. I am able to better appreciate the time that I have with those I care more, because I know that it may not last forever.

It is in these hollow moments while wallowing in pain and these moments of euphoric happiness that make loving another a greatest and worst of all of our life's experiences. Without the pain of loss we could not appreciate the moments of closeness, trust, and love from those that we are close to. Enjoy that you have the pain so that you better appreciate those special and loving relationships in your life. Let the tears flow and the pain work its way through for when the time has come, the pain subsided, and you find yourself moving on - life will continue and you will love again. It will never be the same as with anyone in your past, but it will be unique and fulfilling in its own right.

Gay Marriage

I have mentioned before that I support gay marriages (same-sex marriages) and that I am willing to perform same-sex marriages. This is a civil right issue and it is a travesty that this is an issue here in America.

What follows are a few links that talk about gay rights and gay marriage. If you take a look at nothing here but one link - check out Out Take Online - click through the intro and take a look at the Trailer.

You may also want to check out the book 'God is not a Homophobe: An unbiased look at Homosexuality in the Bible' by Philo Thelios.

Thanks for stopping by.

I am Ordained

On May 25, 2007 I became an ordained minister for the Universal Life Church. Why did it do that? That is a good question and I am going to try to answer it, at least a little bit, here. Some will laugh and some will cry (at the apparent absurdity) when reading this, and that is OK. =)

Religion, theology, spirituality or whatever you would like to call it is a person seeking that answer to the question that plagues each and every person in one way or time or another. Some have the strength to look for the answers themselves and some do not. Some are happy being told what to believe and some find satisfaction in their own pursuit to the answer. I have not really cared either way until the last few years when I began my own little search to find my answers. Will I ever truly find the answer? Just like everyone else - No, I shall not. Will I find the answers that make sense to me and sate my need for more answers? I certainly hope so.

There are things that I have thought and read about (from civil rights and relationships to religion) and conclusions that I have come to (but I will discuss them at a later time), and being guided by my home in Unitarian Universalism which has an penchant for lay lead services, I found this ordainment path rather appropriate for me.

Becoming ordained, is in some way, a personal affirmation that I am in charge of my spiritual journey and that no one else can travel it for me. I am responsible for my beliefs and no one can tell me what to believe. (Well, they can, but that does not mean that I will be a believer.) I must decide and discover what truths resonate inside me. Others may assist me along my journey by helping me to discover what I believe, but let them not condemn me for not partaking fully what is true in their own heart, for in each person lays their own truth and only they have the power to discover and unleash it.

I have semi-recently performed my first wedding ceremony and wow was I nervous. I am happy and more than willing to perform services for (and I support) those of the 'LGBT+P' persuasion.

Normal or Perfect?

Normal and Perfect? What exactly are these states of being? Are you normal or perfect? I am pretty sure I am not either of those. I am pretty sure that no one I know is. 'Normal' and 'Perfect' are artificial constructs created by humanity to inflict pain and suffering upon others.

Some would claim that these are useful baselines for comparison, but these ideals are key to creating divisive and hate filled lines with which we separate the 'normal' from the 'not-normal'; those that choose not to hide their differences from these models, and those that do. No one would truly claim to be perfect, but some will not mind the pursuit of such and as well as separating the chaff from the wheat in the oft times violent process.

We need to forget whatever this normal and perfect is, because it is not. It does not exist and remembering and referencing it only hurts people and ruins chances for people to feel free and happy with themselves and others. These artificial and non-existent states are a bane to peace in the world.

I want someone to list what is 'normal' right now. I bet that you will get as many different answers as there are people that are thinking of answers. Normal and perfect will vary from person to person and culture to culture. Do not force others to conform to your world view because your world view exists behind those neat little rose colored glasses in your head. The only normal people are the ones you do not know very well. Joe Ancis

I'm done. I feel better now. Rant Finished. You can lock me up now. =)

Civil Unions and Marriage Ban in Wisconsin

I want to talk about the Civil Unions and Marriage Ban in Wisconsin from a White Man's Burden sort of perspective. If you have seen the movie I think that you know where I will be going with this. This is a great statement movie starring John Travolta and Harry Belafonte, where the racial roles are reversed between the African American and White communities. In this movie African Americans are dominate racial force and whites are the minority.

Role Reversal

The majority of people in the world are heterosexual. What if this was not the case? What if it was the other way around? What if homosexual relationships were the norm (we are going to disregard the species perpetuation issues with this, so work with me here).

Being heterosexual in a homosexual world. You are in love with someone of the opposite sex even though the world tells you that you are wrong and you might even have a disease or mental disorder. You are afraid to show your love and commitment for your partner for fear of ostricization or being spurned, not only by people that you do not know, but your friends and family as well.

You get together with your partner and declare you love and commitment together and you want to get married. You cannot due to government laws, and because of this you are not able to get health insurance from your partner, see them in the hospital, make medical and financial decisions for them in case of an emergency, get bereavement leave, and host of other benefits that are taken for granted by the homosexual majority.

How lonely it is. Living in fear and worry that something might happen to your partner and you may not be able to do something about it because the government is trying to tell you who you can love and are trying to punish you for it.

Final Thoughts for Today's World

How will same sex unions in todays world affect you. Odds are that it will not affect you at all, unless you are in the homosexual minority seeking marital rights for you and your loved one.

Whether or not same-sex unions are allowed will not affect the heterosexual population at all. Same sex unions happen whether anyone likes it or not. These unions currently may not have the force or protection of law but they are still there, even if you do not want to acknowledge it.

Allowing marital freedom, as it is intended, to same-sex marriages will give everyone the peace of mind that they deserve for committing to their loved ones. It will give everyone the safety and security that is deserved for their commitment. On November 7th go out there and vote against this tragedy in American politics and prevent the destruction of the true meaning of marriage - commitment. Do not let intolerance and prejudice be the cornerstone of your country's laws. Take back America and let it stand for Freedom.
