Evolutionary Creationism?

I have found a post about the Atheon that provides me with a convenient label for my beliefs on our origin, if you will: Evolutionary Theology or Evolutionary Creationism. I have believed in this way for a very long time and its just nice to know that I am not alone in my thoughts and to have a label for it.

It appears that a man named Michael Dowd pioneered this belief in his book "Thank God for Evolution"". I will have to pick it up and give it a read.

Ordination Anniversary

Today will mark the first full year that I have been ordained by the Universal Life Church. Since that day I have performed 2 weddings which has been a heart warming experience. It is wonderful to be apart of this rite of passage with these families. It is hard to put into the words the joy of performing weddings and participating and witnessing their passage and vow to one another.

Being ordained also has me asking a lot of questions about religion and and priests and exactly what it means to be a Priest, Father, Minister, Pasteur, Reverend, etc...

I will also probably pick up a few more weddings or other rites this year as well.

Sacred Texts

Sacred texts such as the Bible and the Koran are tools that can be used for ill or for good. If you go to these with ill will, prejudice, and malice in your heart then that is what you will find. If you go to it with love, compassion, and acceptance then that is what you will find. These sacred-texts are not inherently good or evil. It, as well as hand guns or cars, are merely refined lumps of inert matter. It is the user, the wielder of said item, whose actions shall be wrought of carelessness, and compassion or malice for their fellow man that shall give them power.

Vanity, arrogance, hubris and pride while reading these text can lead to a false sense of assuredness of interpretation. A wise man is one that will ask why their interpretation is correct or incorrect, and even in the face of affirmative evidence be willing to doubt its seeming validity. All 'truth' is seen through the eyes, ears, and thoughts of person that are born on the wings of transgressions, preconceptions, love, fear, doubt, assumptions, and pride. How can any man know the full truth when we see life through such a blurry and soiled lens? How can man, with all our flaws and fears, know the truth and use these sacred texts appropriately?

The True Disease of Humanity: Divisiveness

Throughout the history of humanity we have forged the answer to our spiritual or theological question with a plethora of disparate answers: polytheism, monotheism, animism, atheism, universalism, humanism and a variety of other answers that also come in a wide variety of very specific flavors. So many religions, beliefs, spiritual or aspiritual paths that are in the world that are given credence by many different cultures, backgrounds and ethnicities. Some examples of these more specific answers are as follows:

Unitarian Universalist, Catholic, Orthodox, Christian, Mormon, Methodist, Presbyterian, Muslim, Pagan, Wicca, Druid, Witchcraft, Buddhist, Hindu, Zen, Bahai Faith, Quaker, Spirit or Ancestor Worship, etc... We also have the Agnostics, Freethinkers, Humanists, and Secularists and a whole bunch more that I am not going to name for the sake of brevity.

What was the predominant 'answer' before Christianity rose to the forefront - Polytheism. The worship of multiple deities such as was found in the Norse, Celtic, Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Persian, and Sumerian cultures as well as many others in the days of yore. How can we can we reconcile this in our predominately monotheistic world? How does all of this variety make any sense? Polytheism exist today in the pagan/wiccan religions as well as other faiths, while Christianity is still one of the most dominant and forceful answers - and yet there are still these other answers to humanity's need for an answer to 'that question' than burns inside of us all in one way or another.

Evangelists of a faith will often say that they are right and the one true answer and that if you do not follow their belief that nasty things happen to you either now or after you have passed on. We are right be cause our sacred religious text says so. What makes any one religion the one true religion that will offer you your salvation (assuming that is what you are looking for)? How will you know? How can anyone know for sure? Humanity is divided into many religions and (a)spiritual paths, and many people preach their path in an 'us verses everyone else' mentality - the 'we are right and you are going to hell' religious elitism that segregates and divides us as a people and puts us at odds with one another, much to our detriment.

Within a Single Faith No One Completely Agrees on How that Faith is Defined:

No two people can completely agree as to how a specific religion should be practiced in-toto. Each person has their own version of what is right and wrong for their religious beliefs and that is steeped in opinions, misinterpretations, biases, prejudices, and life experiences. Many of the mainstream beliefs are agreed upon but once you get past that it is a wholly different game. If the leaders and faithful of a given religion cannot agree about what it is to truly practice or be a member of their proclaimed religion how can they not be divided? How can they be one? How can there be one true theological or spiritual answer if everyone cannot agree even within their chosen faith?

Who is right? Who is wrong?

We are humans. We are all the brothers and sisters of humanity: Black, White, Chinese, African, Irish, Protestant, Wiccan, Hippy, Liberal, Socialist, Libertarian, Freak, Queer, Straight, Cloistered, Free, Obese, Skinny, Forlorn, Optimistic. However you want to label someone, their lifestyle, their beliefs, or appearance does not matter because at the end of the day we all bleed the same. We all are human - fallible, mistake ridden, arrogant, biased and loving. Our cultures value being right and believe that if I am right than someone else has to be wrong and therefore inferior or somehow lesser. This belief that there is always a right and a wrong is part of the problem as it leads to division, superiority, contempt, and fear.

How can life be so cleanly defined with so many different beliefs? Life is more about shades of gray. People within a faith cannot agree as to what it means in-toto how to worship in their faith how can there be a clearly defined right or wrong. To one person something may be right and to another it is wrong and even have very well thought out rationalizations for it. Everyone has an opinion. Everyone likes to think that they are right and by virtue, someone else has to be wrong. And even some want to kill, torture, and enslave you because they think you are wrong and that somehow you need to be punished or saved from your conviction or lack thereof.

I value intelligent discourse about theology and (a)spirituality, and am willing to change my views in light of a better understanding, but I guarantee you that if you try to force your beliefs on me that I will not acquiesce and resist anything that you have to say, especially if you threaten my safety of the safety of the people that I care about. Enacting divisive behavior only begets the same - more divisiveness.

You are Wrong and You are Right.

I propose to you today that you are all wrong about your theological views. I also propose that you are also right. You are right to believe that your faith is right for you, but you are wrong to believe that your faith is what is right for anyone else. You are also wrong to believe that another person's religion is wrong, because it is wrong for you. Having the ability to impose and force your beliefs onto someone or a peoples does not make it any more correct or right. You will have only sown fear and anger into those that you subject you beliefs upon while pushing them further from 'your answer'.

We need to celebrate that we have different answers and bask in the glory of diversity. We are human and we all have a (a)spiritual or theological belief. We are not all going to agree even if we are of the same faith. I want you to talk about religion, theology, or spirituality with like minded and different minded people. Find your commonalities and differences and accept them. Their religions' views are different than yours and that is OK because everyone's is going to be different in one way or another and that does not make it wrong. It just makes it different. Our religious beliefs are as varied and similar as we humans are ourselves.

Divisiveness

Divisiveness is the true enemy of our happiness as a species and I do not just mean religious divisiveness: national and sexual, ethnic and racial, cultural and monetary. We need to break down the divisions and prejudices in humanity so that we can all be truly free and safe. We need to accept and try to understand one another, and accept that we may not agree on many issues, but that does not make us wrong, just different. Racial and ethnic prejudice as well as religious are among the greatest crimes against humanity that needs to be stopped.

Wars and civil crimes are being committed with prejudice, fear, and hatred as its impetus and this is a horrible and unforgivable crime that we all have to stop. Every single human being has the power to make a difference, but you have to want to make a difference. I do not mean the difference of creating divisions of humanity, I mean the difference of love, acceptance, and healing. Take a moment right now and make the pledge to make a difference: to love one another and to be able to agree to disagree; for it to be OK to not have the same theological beliefs; to fight prejudice and fear in your heart and replace it will love and acceptance. Anything other than that and you be part of the problem. We are all part of the problem just by virtue of being human. We are not perfect and can never be, but we can strive to set as good example by changing how we think and how we act towards one another.

10 Reasons Why Gay Marriage is Wrong!

  1. Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, cosmetic surgery, hair dye and air conditioning.
  2. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.
  3. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.
  4. Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.
  5. Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Brittany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.
  6. Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.
  7. Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.
  8. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.
  9. Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.
  10. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

Gay Marriage

I have mentioned before that I support gay marriages (same-sex marriages) and that I am willing to perform same-sex marriages. This is a civil right issue and it is a travesty that this is an issue here in America.

What follows are a few links that talk about gay rights and gay marriage. If you take a look at nothing here but one link - check out Out Take Online - click through the intro and take a look at the Trailer.

You may also want to check out the book 'God is not a Homophobe: An unbiased look at Homosexuality in the Bible' by Philo Thelios.

I am Ordained

On May 25, 2007 I became an ordained minister for the Universal Life Church. Why did it do that? That is a good question and I am going to try to answer it, at least a little bit, here. Some will laugh and some will cry (at the apparent absurdity) when reading this, and that is OK. =)

Religion, theology, spirituality or whatever you would like to call it is a person seeking that answer to the question that plagues each and every person in one way or time or another. Some have the strength to look for the answers themselves and some do not. Some are happy being told what to believe and some find satisfaction in their own pursuit to the answer. I have not really cared either way until the last few years when I began my own little search to find my answers. Will I ever truly find the answer? Just like everyone else - No, I shall not. Will I find the answers that make sense to me and sate my need for more answers? I certainly hope so.

There are things that I have thought and read about (from civil rights and relationships to religion) and conclusions that I have come to (but I will discuss them at a later time), and being guided by my home in Unitarian Universalism which has an penchant for lay lead services, I found this ordainment path rather appropriate for me.

Becoming ordained, is in some way, a personal affirmation that I am in charge of my spiritual journey and that no one else can travel it for me. I am responsible for my beliefs and no one can tell me what to believe. (Well, they can, but that does not mean that I will be a believer.) I must decide and discover what truths resonate inside me. Others may assist me along my journey by helping me to discover what I believe, but let them not condemn me for not partaking fully what is true in their own heart, for in each person lays their own truth and only they have the power to discover and unleash it.

I have semi-recently performed my first wedding ceremony and wow was I nervous. I am happy and more than willing to perform services for (and I support) those of the 'LGBT+P' persuasion.

Coming Out...

I am going to come clean about a few things here. I think what I post here will surprise most of you that know me. =) I do not usually discuss politics or religion to anyone really, mostly due to not knowing what my beliefs are and not knowing enough. I am in the process of developing my political and religious views, and this journey has taken me to some interesting places, of which I will detail below.

Political Leanings

According to PoliticalCompass.org I am a slightly left leaning Libertarian ( I think that I am reading that correct?):

Economic Left/Right: -1.50 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.64

I am not exactly sure what that specifically means, but I think that it shows that I have strong Libertarian views, which I think is close to true.

Micronationalism

In the process of this journey I have joined a micronation called the Republic of Talossa which has been a very interesting experience that has caused me to think about and investigate topics and ideas that I would never have broached otherwise.

Shortly after joining I was nominated and accepted the position of Secretary of State which took me by surprise. In this position I am in charge of the electoral process and the National Register of Law which I completely recoded.

I have also joined their political party called the Union for Talossan Progress for which I have created a simple site for them and posted my modest views and ideas which will be in short form posted below.

World Government

As a part of the Micronational experience I have come upon the World Government site which blows great big HTML and usability chunks. I have taken steps to recode much of the site so that it is usable and standards compliant, but I have more to do. The great thing about this is that it is based on the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights which is a great thing and I very much support. Take a look at it.

Miscellaneous Views

Here come some interesting views that you may find interesting and/or shocking.

Marriage

Some basic views about the institution of marriage and civil unions:

In short Marriage should be privitized or atleast unrestricted as marriage in-an-of-itself is really a religious and/or very personal decision that the government should have exactly no say in. The government should maintain a database of contracts for those who wish to solidify or contractualize their union; of course, this would mean redoing much of the tax, divorce, insurance, and child custody and care laws. When is hell going to freeze over?

I am for gay Marriage and I support Poly marriages as well. Again this is a personal choice and the government has no place in it. Check out Fair Wisconsin to help stop the ban on same sex unions.

Time and Measurement

I believe that we should be fully metric, using the 24 hour clock and possibly an alternate decimal clock, and definitively using the International Fixed Calendar.

Religious Leanings

Exploring my religious beliefs has been interesting. I do not have very strong religious leanings as no specific religion has appealed to me and my rather liberal beliefs, as you can see from above.

I have a problem with religion in general as some religions are potentially the richest organizations in the world. There may come a point where decisions made within the church are business and not religious ones, or are financially motivated rather than faith motivated. There are stories of churches that require their congregation to tithe via automatic electronic withdrawal and require a specific percentage of your income. Ugghhh!!!

Oh, and the last reason why I am not keen on religions is that many wars have been started due to religious reasons and horrible crimes against humanity committed with fath based justification.

So, with these thoughts in mind I do not have a really great view of religions. Now, barring those issues, churches have done some wonderful things for people around the world: missionary work, building houses, and providing personal and financial support to their members and non-members amongst other wonderful things. Great community activism. Very cool!

I looked to Bahai'ism, but that did not quite fit me. Then my search turned to Unitarian Universalist. I am currently researching this religion and I think that this will be the best fit for me. I am not sure yet. We will see.

I have come to find that Thomas Jefferson was Unitarian and he has created and published the Jefferson Bible where he stripped out the supernatural and tried to boil down the teachings of Jesus into a book of morality, which is something that I have long thought would be best use for biblical teachings.

In closing

In closing I have been thinking and doing a lot of research on these topics and have come to some interesting and unexpected conclusions during this journey. I would like to thank my wonderful parents who raised me to be and conservatively open-minded and understanding.
